Awake in the Wild: Meditation in Nature Retreat

With Mark Coleman

July 7 - 13, 2017

“The wilderness holds answers to more questions than we yet know how to ask.”  – Nancy Newhall

Following ancient spiritual traditions that value the transformative power of nature, this workshop will be spent meditating outdoors in the natural beauty and mystery here at Vallecitos Mountain Ranch.  Whether it is during sunset meditations, listening to the soothing sounds of the river, or sitting graced in the stillness of the aspen trees, we will open to the profound serenity and wisdom of nature.

Participants will learn about the practice of Mindfulness – the capacity to be present to ourselves and our environment and then learn how to apply this receptivity to developing a contemplative relationship with nature. By cultivating this inner quiet and open curious spirit outdoors we can learn from nature as the ultimate teacher, and deepen our connection and appreciation of the earth in which we live. Participants will discover how meditative time outdoors leads to beautiful states of joy, peace, wonder, love and connection with oneself, each other and the larger web of life. What is also revealed is how the timeless teachings of the Dharma – like the Buddha’s teachings on impermanence, non-clinging, and the selfless nature of experience are readily accessible as we meditate outdoors.

During this experiential workshop, there will be nature-based meditations, individual and group exercises and talks on meditation and nature as well as group and individual meetings with the teacher. There will be time to relish in the silence outdoors and ample opportunity to explore and discuss the art of meditation in nature.

To support the meditation process, complete silence is maintained throughout the retreat except during meetings with your teachers and group discussion. Your teacher is committed to being available to you if you need to talk with them outside of the scheduled meetings.

This workshop is appropriate for beginners and experienced meditators who are curious about meditation, mindfulness and how to deepen our insight practice and open our connection to the mystery of the natural world.  Be prepared for unexpected delight, mystery, silence and illumination.
